The country of Jamaica holds a special place in my heart since this is where my grandparents are from and where my parents grew up. The family and I travel to Jamaica quite often and normally stay with family, but this time (August 2018) the adventure began at Hotel Riu Ocho Rios, a five star hotel located alongside the stunning Mammee Bay beach on Jamaica's north coast..
We picked this hotel as we wanted one with a pool, nice beach, spa area and plenty of good dining options, and Hotel Riu did not disappoint.
I felt like I was in my own tropical paradise being surrounded by palm trees and lush greenery. The whole hotel is a photoshoot heaven. The scenery is absolutely stunning and a true work of art.
It has been scientifically proven that being in nature, or even viewing scenes of nature, reduces anger, fear, and stress and increases pleasant feelings. I certainly felt at peace wandering around this hotel, soaking up that Vitamin D.
My mother and I spent about 5 days here before we were off to visit family out in Harbour View. It took just over two hours for us to arrive and one of the things I was looking forward to the most was uploading the pictures I captured on the journey straight onto social media. I asked my cousin for the WIFI as soon as I could but was told "there is no WIFI," and my heart felt like it literally sank.
I despaired at the thought that I would have to go 3-4 days without social media - sad I know haha. Little did I know that this experience would strengthen my ambition.
Having no WIFI forced me to pay closer attention to my surroundings and this is what I learnt:
Limited resources should not be used as an excuse for why you have not started your business or stepped outside of your comfort zone. I saw a family member cutting and measuring wood with a small cutting tool. At first, I didn't know what he was making but he kept walking past with more wood and more wood every time he finished cutting a piece. I later discovered he was making shelves for a shop and that he made a wardrobe and bed using this same cutting tool. Now, if you don't think you have the right resources to start something new, I hope this man inspires you.
The little things we often take for granted will become the very big things you will learn to appreciate. Staying in a home that ran out of water, significantly increased my appreciation for water, also it really made me reflect on the opportunities we have back home in the UK. Im talking free events, wifi in stores and the wide range of job opportunities. I would say that it was this experience that pushed me to start going to events alone as it reiterated to me that not many people have the opportunity to be able to access information that would elevate their business so freely, or travel so freely, or find jobs so freely so I made a vow to myself that I would no longer take advantage of these opportunities.
My parents and I spent some time exploring the island and some of my favourite places include Hope Gardens, Dunns River Falls, Devon House, Hellshire Beach, Dolphin Cove and YS Falls. These six breathtaking places are a must see if you haven't yet been to Jamaica or seen them already.
My mother and I went back to Riu Hotel for the last few days of our holiday and something else that we absolutely adored about this hotel was the wide range of delicious food and drinks. I loved seeing my smoothie being freshly made by the chef every morning. However, you cannot leave Jamaica without KFC and Tastee Patty touching your tongue.
The staff at Riu Hotel were exceptionally friendly, the whole atmosphere was chilled and the entertainment was enjoyable to watch. I couldn't stop laughing at times. I'll definitely be heading back to this hotel again sometime in the future.
